Fish Out of Water

I never imagined I would be here. It’s hard to believe that nearly two months have already passed since we began this new chapter. Running a bed and breakfast was something I occasionally fantasized about—a sweet, simple, and homey life that felt like the perfect Gen X dream.
It’s a life I had longed for since childhood. As an Air Force brat, I moved often—from the Pacific Northwest to Texas, Georgia, and finally Virginia. I was always the new kid, never quite feeling like I fit in, and never truly feeling at home anywhere. More than anything, I craved a place to put down roots, even as I cherished the adventures and friendships that came with constant change.

After years in administrative and customer service roles, my greatest joy has always been making people feel cared for. Yet stepping into hospitality revealed nuances I hadn’t anticipated. Once again, I felt like a fish out of water. This time, however, I was determined to swim.
Every day brings new lessons, and the learning curve has been both humbling and deeply rewarding. I am no longer the same person who first walked through these doors. The experience is transforming me in ways I never expected.
Cooking has always been my love language, so I’ve embraced it as my way of connecting with our guests. While I may not share Chris’s natural ease in commanding a room, my pride in The Manor, my affection for this beautiful property, and my commitment to creating memorable experiences are what keep me moving forward.

At its heart, this journey has reinforced one of life’s most important truths: the greatest growth comes from embracing discomfort and committing to learn. I’m grateful to be doing exactly that—right here, in this place we’re so proud to call home.
